Diffusive spreading and mixing of fluid monolayers

چکیده

The use of ultra-thin, i.e., monolayer films plays an important role for the emerging field of nano-fluidics. Since the dynamics of such films is governed by the interplay between substrate-fluid and fluid-fluid interactions, the transport of matter in nanoscale devices may be eventually efficiently controlled by substrate engineering. For such films, the dynamics is expected to be captured by two-dimensional lattice-gas models with interacting particles. Using a lattice gas model and the non-linear diffusion equation derived from the microscopic dynamics in the continuum limit, we study two problems of relevance in the context of nano-fluidics. The first one is the case in which along the spreading direction of a monolayer a mesoscopic-sized obstacle is present, with a particular focus on the relaxation of the fluid density profile upon encountering and passing the obstacle. The second one is the mixing of two monolayers of different particle species which spread side by side following the merger of two chemical lanes, here defined as domains of high affinity for fluid adsorption surrounded by domains of low affinity for fluid adsorption. Double diffusive reaction-convection in viscous fluid layer

In the present study, the onset of double diffusive reaction-convection in a uid layer with viscous fluid, heated and salted from below subject to chemical equilibrium on the boundaries, has been investigated. Linear and nonlinear stability analysis have been performed. For linear analysis normal mode technique is used and for nonlinear analysis minimal representation of truncated Fourier serie...

Probing Difference in Diffusivity of Chloromethanes through Water Ice in the Temperature Range of 110-150 K

In this work, we have examined the diffusive mixing of chloromethanes in different molecular solids H2O, D2O, and CH3OH by monitoring their chemical sputtering spectra due to the impact of Ar+ ions in the collision energy range of 3-60 eV, focusing on amorphous solid water. The chemical sputtering spectra have been monitored over the temperature window accessible by liquid nitrogen, and the cov...

Specific antibody-dependent interactions between macrophages and lipid haptens in planar lipid monolayers.

The binding of guinea pig peritoneal macrophages to planar lipid monolayers on alkylated glass is shown to be highly specific, requiring lipid hapten in the monolayer and specific anti-hapten IgG antibody. This is true for both "fluid" and "solid" monolayer membranes, in which the lateral diffusion coefficients of fluorescent lipid probes and bound fluorescent antibodies differ by at least two ...

Amphotericin B and Cholesterol in Monolayers and Bilayers

The antimycotic activity of amphotericin B depends on its ability to make complexes with cell membrane sterols. Surface pressure (π) as a function of surface area (A) and π-A hysteresis were measured for monolayers of amphotericin B/cholesterol mixtures on the water/air interface. Specific area per molecule of amphotericin B and free energy of mixing were calculated as a function of concentrati...

Characterization of unsteady double-diffusive mixed convection flow with soret and dufour effects in a square enclosure with top moving lid

The present study considers the numerical examination of an unsteady thermo-solutal mixed convection when the extra mass and heat diffusions, called as Soret and Dufour effects, were not neglected. The numerical simulations were performed in a lid-driven cavity, where the horizontal walls were kept in constant temperatures and concentrations. The vertical walls were well insulated. A finite vol...
